Geeta Phogat comes from the family of wrestling, where her father and sisters are wrestlers too. She is the first Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at Commonwealth Games 2010. She also holds the record for being the first Indian woman wrestler to qualify for Olympics.

Family

Hailing form, the Balali village in Haryana, she is the daughter of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a recipient of the Dronacharya award, a famous wrestler of his times. Both her sister and cousin brother, Babita Kumari and Vinesh Phogat have won gold medals in Commonwealth Games. Her other sisters, Ritu Phogat and Sangita Phogat are also international level wrestlers.

Recently, a film ‘Dangal’ was made based on the lives of Geeta and her sisters.

Career

Geeta Phogat career came into limelight in 2009 when she won her first gold medal in Commonwealth Wrestling Championship held in Punjab. Next year she went on to be the first Indian gold medallist in wrestling (women’s) at Commonwealth Games in New Delhi 2010.

Since then, there has been no setback in the career of this young Indian wrestler who is the flag bearer of women athletes in India. She has won a bronze medal in the World Wrestling Championship 2012, followed by another bronze in Asian Wrestling Championships in the same year.

In 2013, Geeta Phogat had won a silver medal at Commonwealth Wrestling Championships, in Johannesburg where she had competed in the 59kgs category of freestyle wrestling. And finally, in the year 2015, she had finished third and had won a bronze medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships held in Doha.

Geeta Phogat is married to another wrestler Pawan Kumar. Growing up in a conservative Haryanvi family, where preference was given to the male child, she fought male wrestlers in her childhood as there were no female wrestlers to compete with.
