Let x be the edge length of smaller cube

Let y be the edge length of larger cube

.: y=16cm

Now, to make smaller cubes of edge length 4cm total surface area of larger cube would be equal to n times total surface area of smaller cube.

Total surface area of a cube of edge length= L can be given as T.S.A.=6(L2)

Hence

6(y2)=n×6(x2)

.: 6(y2)/6=(n)(x2)

.: y2=(n)(x2)

.: (16×16)=(n)(4×4)

.: 256=16n

.: n=16

Therefore 16 small cubes of 4cm edge length can be made from 1 large cube having edge length 16cm .
