So... some of my friends did a project on cyber crimes for the Science Expo, and here's some of their info (some of the info is given by me too, as I'm also a cyber-expert):

CYBER-CRIMES:

Cyber-crimes can be defined as: "Offences that are committed against individuals or groups of individuals with a criminal motive to intentionally harm the reputation of the victim or cause physical or mental harm, or loss, to the victim directly or indirectly, using modern telecommunication networks such as Internet (networks including chat rooms, emails, notice boards and groups) and mobile phones (Bluetooth/SMS/MMS)"

There are various types of cyber-crimes. These include:

  • Phishing ( pronounced as 'fishing') : It is a type of cyber crime where the hacker uses improper or illegal websites and pretends to be your online friend and sends you a link to that website, so that he can access your account, mail ID and passwords ( I remember this very well because one of my classmates has been 'phished').
  • Identity theft, or misusing personal info.
  • Hacking: Misusing websites, other computers or networks ...
  • Spreading hate and inciting 'un-harmonial' feelings , like racism, etc.

...and many other less important ones.

Need to stop cyber-crimes:

Cyber-crime may threaten a person or a nation's security and financial health.[4] Issues surrounding these types of crimes have become high-profile, particularly those surrounding hacking, copyright infringement, unwarranted mass-surveillance, some really bad ones I needn't mention, and child grooming. There are also problems of privacy when confidential information is intercepted or disclosed, lawfully or otherwise.A report, published in 2014, estimated that the annual damage to the global economy was $445 billion.[5] Approximately $1.5 billion was lost in 2012 to online credit and debit card fraud in the US.[6] In 2018, a study by Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), in partnership with McAfee, concludes that close to $600 billion, nearly one percent of global GDP, is lost to cyber-crimes each year. Even people who are continuously trolled and blackmailed may commit suicide.

How to protect yourself from cyber-crimes:

  • Never use a link sent to you by an unknown person.
  • Never use insecure websites and apps.
  • Don't reveal your personal info to AIs such as SIRI, Alexa, Google Assistant...(there has been rumours that AIs transmit your personal info  to a group of hackers, particularly fake AIs, but it's never been proved. But,a step ahead, for the best!!)
  • Use anti-VIRUS applications.
  • Be cyber-secure, i.e,...keep your computer systems safe.
  • Use tough, hard-to-crack passwords.

Mark it as the brainliest!!!
