The Counter Reformation movement was started to prevent the spread of Protestantism, during the time of Pope Paul III (1468 – 1549). It was also called the Catholic Reformation or the Catholic Revival.

The movement started with the Council of Trent in 1545, which condemned heresies spread by the Protestants and their supporters, issued clarifications of the Church’s doctrines and other teachings.
