Two young girls from gram panchayats of Jagatsinghpur district have embarked on a mission to address issues and problems affecting rural life. They have been inspired by the fictional character ‘Meena’ created by Unicef through comics, cartoon and animation films.
The young volunteers or ‘Meenas’, as they are known, have taken up several socio-economic, health and sanitation issues while spreading awareness among the people, particularly
women.“Meena clubs have begun operating in villages since March,” said Rabindra Mohapatra,Sarpanch of Mangarajpur gram panchayat.More than a dozen Meena clubs comprising young girls and housewives have come up in
Bagadia and Mangarajpur gram panchayats.Initially, the male members of the village were hesitant to allow the women to be a part of the project. However, after the girls started doing
good work, many housewives joined them with consent from men.
