The determination of the anion acetate in the salt is done by ferric chloride test and that of the cation, lead is done by potassium iodide test.
Explanation:
The given salt contains lead as cation and acetate as anion.
Determination of acetate:
- The odour of the salt is vinegar like.
- To the original solution of salt, concentrated sulphuric acid was added, evolution of a colourless gas smelling like vinegar indicates the presence of acetate.
- To the O.S when neutral ferric chloride solution was added, a deep red coloured solution confirmed the presence of Acetate.
Determination of lead:
- To the salt solution addition of dilute hydrochloric acid formed a white precipitate, which disappeared on boiling the solution.
- Addition of few drops of potassium chromate to the solution gave a yellow precipitate indicating the presence of lead.
- To the solution, addition of potassium iodide formed a yellow precipitate, which disappeared on heating and reappeared on colling. This confirmed the presence of lead.
