Basically, the band gap (energy) in the semiconductor is the energy required by the electron to jump to the higher level to attain the excited state and only the conduction can be done.

This band gap is dependent on the temperature of the semiconductor, material of the semiconductor and pressure.

The band gap can be determined by the band gap apparatus at different temperatures. The result is plotted on the graph. And the slope of the  graph is used to determine the band gap of semiconductor.
