Searle’s method to determine elastic constant of wire:
• We use Searle's method to determine the Young's modulus of a material. As Young's modulus is free of the shape of the material, we can use any shape for its calculation.
• In certain, a thin circular wire achieves our requirement. In this method, the length L of the wire is determined by a scale, diameter d of the wire is measured by a screw gauge, length l of the wire is determined by a Micrometer or Vernier scale, and F is indicated by external force.
Differentiate the expression for Y to get the relative error in the restrained value of Y,
ΔY/Y=ΔL/L+2Δd/d+ Δl/l
ΔL, Δd, and Δl are the errors in the determination of L, d and l, respectively. Generally, accuracy of these errors extents rely on the least count of the computing instrument.
