To draw the characteristic curve of zener diode and to determine the reverse breakdown voltage we will have to do the following:

  • Rig up the circuit.
  • Make sure voltmeter and ammeter are in working condition.
  • Make sure you get a zero reading when rheostat is taken to one of the farther ends.
  • By varying the rheostat make sure you increase the voltage in small steps which in turn will lead to increase in current.
  • At a particular voltage 'Vb' the current rises sharply. This voltage is nothing but the breakdown voltage.
  • After this, the voltage becomes constant whereas the reverse current goes on increasing.
