To find thickness of a coin by a centimetre scale or millimetre scale.
Imagine you are asked to find the thickness of a five rupees coin by using a
centimetre scale. If you use one such coin to measure thickness as shown in
Fig. 2.8(a), it will not be very accurate.
In order to find accurate thickness take 20 such coins and place them one upon
another as shown in Fig. 2.8(b). Measure the thickness of 20 coins. Divide the total
thickness by 20. This will give a more accurate thickness of one coin.
Thickness of 20 coins = x cm (say)
