Non-metals are on the right of the periodic table. They are also Group A elements. This is significant because it means the group number is the same as the number of valence electrons. They also reside in the p-block which means these valence electrons are also p electrons. Now go to the end of the period and you will find the nearest nobel gas which has an electronic configuration that shows a full p shell (i.e.6).
