The cooling effect resulting from the net radiant heat loss by an ordinary roof cannot be utilized directly for cooling the building below it. This is so because an ordinary roof must have a reasonable thermal resistance, in order to minimize heat loss in winter and daytime heat gain in summer. Almost all the “cold” resulting from the radiant heat loss at the roof's external surface is dispersed by the ambient air above the roof. Therefore, specialized design details, or systems, have to be applied in order to utilize the potential available in radiant heat loss.
