To give practical shape to his concept of Education, Gandhifi sought the help of
educational experts. He asked them to draw up a scheme of basic education according to
the principle that all knowledge, skills and activities which were regarded to be necessary
for the education of the child, should center round some useful craft and the whole
process should be permeated with the spirit of a social and moral philosophy based on
truth and non-violence. The Government of India also accepted the scheme of basic
education with some reservations and wanted all primary eduation to be gradually
remodelled on this pattern. At the end of 1956, schools of the basic type were educating
over 1 million children.
