Aftab Alam lived in a small villagenamed  Danger Pora in Baramulla where the population was not even fifteen hundred. For generations his family had woven pashmina shawls and sold in Srinagar market to earn a lot of profit. At that time Kashmir was not hit by terrorism and life was peaceful in that small, not -so-happening village. He was happy with his small family.

It was in 1990 that situation became serious in Kashmir due to Indo-Pak conflict and terrorist attack disturbing the life of people. For Aftab, sustaining his family became difficult as now he could not afford to sell his shawls very often. Where he could sell almost forty to fifty shawls in a month, now the number was reduced to four or five; moreover, the village did not provide any other opportunity for earning.

Time sped among all the uncertainties and hardships. The idea of leaving the village was never appealing for Aftab. Just before Eid he wove a wonderful shawl and asked his wife to wash before he could sell it . She spread it out in courtyard for drying expecting that they could celebrate better Eid if the shawl was sold. When Aftab went to take the shawl from the courtyard, to his dismay, the rooster of their neighbor, Gurualam had walked over the shawl leaving behind a trail of muddy marks. He felt as if he was struck with 440 volts lightening and everything revolved around him. He shouted out to his wife, "Amina, couldn't you take care of the shawl! See, what the stupid rooster has done to it.' She came and stood their thunderstruck, unable to speak a word, for she couldn't understand how the rooster walked in the courtyard when she had kept the fence gate closed.

Later in the evening Gurualam visited them in a confused state of mind. Though he was Sikh, he had always maintained love with Aftab's family and he wore a sorry look on his face. Aftab offered him to sit; as soon as he sat, he burst out crying saying, 'Brother I know how hard the times are and I am really sorry that my son came with the rooster which spoiled your newly woven shawl. He was so guilty that he couldn't face you and walked away quietly without apologizing. But he told me everything.

Next, he took out some money from his pocket and gave it to Aftab apologizing for his son's deed. When Aftab refused to take the money, he said, 'This is my gift for Eid, you won't refuse.' Aftab was speechless.
