To lift an.automobile of 1600 kg, a hydraulic pump with a larger piston 800 cm^2 in area is employed. If the area of the smaller piston is 10 cm^2, the force that must be applied on it is
1. 20 N
2. 20 kgf
3. 200 kgf
4. 2000 N

answer : option (2) 20kgf
explanation : mass of automobile , M = 1600kg
so, weight of automobile , F1 = Mg = 1600 kgf
area of cross sectional of larger piston , A1 = 800 cm²
let the force that must be applied on smaller piston is F2.
area of cross sectional of smaller piston, A2 = 10cm²
from Pascal's principle, P1 = P2
⇒ F1/A1 = F2/A2
⇒1600kgf/800cm² = F2/10cm²
⇒2 = F2/10
⇒F2 = 20kgf
hence, option (2) is correct choice.
