To plot the graph of temperature of cooling water against time, here is what you need:

  • A thermometer
  • Hot water
  • Graph paper
  • Pencil and ruler

The first step is to use the thermometer to take different temperature readings per unit time.

Record each temperature reading of the cooling water against the time taken.

The process of cooling water:

Gaseous water changes to liquid water at the temperature of 100°C.

The water remains constantly at the temperature of 100°C as bonds form to as gas converts to liquid. This is condensation.

The temperature then drops at a constant rate from 100°C to 0°C.

As water approaches 0°C supercooling takes place then freezing takes place at 0°C. This is freezing.

From this point water becomes solid (ice) as the temperature continues to drop.
