pouring water in calcium oxide is an exothermic reaction which means water is when mixed in calcium oxide liberates energy in form of heat and product formed is calcium hydroxide. I. e.
CaO +H2O == Ca(OH)2 + heat

When water is added to calcium oxide(quicklime)it will be converted to calcium hydroxide (slaked lime)with the liberation of enormous amount of heat.

CaO + H2O(water) = Ca(OH)2+heat

It is an exothermic reaction. Calcium hydroxide is an alkali.
