When water is added to calcium oxide (quicklime), it will be converted to calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) with the liberation of enormous amount of heat.

CaO+H₂O=Ca(OH)²+heat

It is an exothermic reaction.

Calcium hydroxide is an alkali.

Calcium Hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) or slaked lime is a base because in aqueous solution of slaked lime there are hydroxide ions available due to the dissociation of electrolyte (Ca(OH)2).

But while comparing the basic strength (Basicity) of metal hydroxide then it is against a reference.

Comparing in a group the basic strength of metal hydroxide always increases as the metallic character increases down the group. Thus the inoic character of hydroxide is higher so extent of dissociation is higher.
