iron is electroplated with zinc this is called galvanization as zinc reacts with the atmosphere and forms an oxide which is inert in nature which in turn prevents the inner metal (generally iron )from reacting and forming rust

Zinc is more reactive than iron and loose is more electron easily the outer layer of zinc of any galvanized material reacts with the atmospheric oxygen to form zinc oxide (ZnO)which is stronger than zinc.
