Given :  To reach your school at 10:30 AM

you start at 10 AM,

first move 800 m to east,

then 600 m to north

and finally 200m to west,

To Find : average velocity and average speed

Solution:

       800 m to east,

        600 m to north

      200m to west,  = (-200) m East

Distance = 800 + 600 + 200  = 1600 m

Displacement  ( North 600 m  East 600 m)

= √600² + 600²

= 600√2  m

10 AM to 10:30AM

Time = 30 minutes = 1800 Sec

average velocity   = Displacement / Time

= 600√2/ 1800

= √2/ 3

= 0.4714 m/s

average speed = 1600/ 1800

= 8/9

= 0.8889 m/s
