To reduce pollution large industry furnace chimneys use electrostatic precipitators to remove 99% of the dust and ash from the smoke before it is released into the atmosphere. in an electrostatic precipitator, the smoke particles travel through a negatively charged wire mesh first to become negatively charged. as the negatively charged particles travel further up the chimney, they enter an electric field produced in between a pair of metal plates which are connected to a 60,000v power supply.
