Chalk is made from calcium carbonate (CaCO3)/calcite. In this activity the vinegar, which is acidic, reacts with the chalk forming carbon dioxide gas (the bubbles you see during the reaction are the carbon dioxide gas forming ), water, and another calcium compound.

When a Chalk piece is kept in a glass vessel containing Vinegar, it can be observed that the chalk piece dissolves in the solution. Reaction that occurs behind this process is as follows: Acetic acid + Calcium carbonate --> Water + Carbon dioxide + Calcium Acetate.
