Activity
Aim: To show that ionic compounds conduct electricity in water
Materials Required: Beaker, water, common salt, connecting wires, cell/battery, key, bulb.
Procedure:
- Half fill the beaker with distilled water and add 2 spoons of NaCl to it.
- Dip the bare end of two wires in it.
- Connect the wires to a bulb and to a source (cell/battery).
- On switching the circuit on, the bulb will glow.
Observations and Conclusion:
This shows that ionic compounds conduct electricity in water. This is because in water, they get ionized to form their respective ions, which carry current.
