To study osmosis, a student placed a thin potato slice in a salt solution. The slice became soft and shriveled. Then, he placed the shriveled slice in water. The slice regained its original shape. Based on the observations, which of these statements is correct?

This is a process whereby students are taught to understand the process of Osmosis.

The answer is C, that is, the potato slice shrivelled, because the amount of water that was retained inside the potato slice moved from it into the brine or saltwater solution.

This is all due to a shrinking of the cell membranes and the cell tissues and this happens because when a plant cell is inside a hypotonic solution then the cells shrivel.

This can also be done with animal cells in hypotonic and hypertonic solutions.

The correct answer is C) the potato slice shrivelled, because the amount of water that was retained inside the potato slice moved from it into the brine or saltwater solution.

This happen due to exosmosis. When the potato is placed in a hypertonic solution, the concentration gradient was more outside hence the water moved outside hence they become flaccid.
