TO TEST THE ACIDIC OR BASIC NATURE OF THE GIVEN SOLUTIONS BY USING TURMERIC PAPER
AS THE INDICATOR.
MATERIALS REQUIRED : Filter/blotting paper, Turmeric powder, Brush, Solutions of
different acid/base nature.
PROCEDURE : Proceed as follows:
(a) To make turmeric paper
Make a thick paste of turmeric powder (20 g) in distilled water,
Apply this paste on a filter/blotting paper thinly with a brush.
*Allow it to dry. When dry, cut it into strip for testing the solutions.
Turmeric paper is yellow in colour.
(b) Testing the given solutions
Take all the given solutions in the labelled test tubes.
Start from the first solution.
Take a small piece of turmeric paper.
Put à drop of the given solution over turmeric paper and notice any
change in colour
Note down your observations in the observation Table.
* Keep the solution for further work.
Repeat the experiment for all the solutions one by one.
OBSERVATIONS :
Solution/sample Colour change Solution/sample Colour change
Lemon juice
No change
Common salt solution
No change
Tap water
Soda water
Distilled water
Baking soda solution
Soft drink
Sugar solution
Vinegar
Glucose solution
Soap solution
Dilute sulphuric acid
Amla juice
Limewater
Ammonium hydroxide
Sour milk
Curd
Sodium hydroxide
RESULTS : The solutions of
are acidic.
The solutions of
are basic.
The solutions of
........ are neutral.
CONCLUSIONS : Bases/Basic solutions turn yellow colour of turmeric to red,
whereas in acid/acidic solution and neutral solutions it remains
unchanged.
