Aristotle never really placed much faith in observation.He didn't care if his ideas didn't match up with reality.This is a guy who said insects had four legs.So his model,while similar to Ptolemy's was too simplistic.It had planets in orbit around the earth in perfect circles astride interlocking crystal spheres,never mind if the planets motions were manifestly not perfect circles.Conversely,Ptolemy was not all that intersted in underlying theory.He just wanted a mathematical model that explained the observations.In that sense he was more like a modern scientist.So he mapped out the motions of the sun, the moon and every planet individually without much thought as to how they all fit together and as a result, produced a model that actually worked.
