The New Deal was instituted to save the American economy by bringing employment to millions who had lost their homes, farms, and businesses. It did bring some relief to those who were living in abject poverty and starving. The elderly and children were aided by the New Deal and the program known as Social Security. Some saw it as socialism, many were thankful for the aid that allowed them to survive.
