There are a lot of materials to cover, but mainly Meiji restoration catapulted Japan into a world power.

I just want to add a few interesting notes, as timeline goes:

1. First Opium War. The British demonstrated the awesome power of an industrialized nation, and western powers' military interventions in the orient. Japan began to take note.

2. American's gunboat diplomacy, Perry's ships forced open trade with Japan. Luckily Japan was a poor country, western powers were eager to milk China (such as selling Opium and weapons), and left it mostly to itself (same for Korea).

3. Meiji Restoration. Japanese have been good students, before that time (learnt from China) and after that time (learnt from America), they always learnt from the best, wholeheartedly. In just 50 years, they became the teacher for the Chinese, with a modernized country.

4. Military conquest. Both learned from the British, they proved to be the better student as they decimated the Chinese navy, conquered Korea, then defeated the Russian navies (Eastern fleet and Baltic fleet). By that time the British has recognized Japan as the new power in the orient, as it financed and allied with Japan in support of its conquest in Manchuria and war against Russia.

Plz mark this as the brainliest answer.
