To what extent is the individual shaped by society?
Is there such a thing as a social structure that constrains individual action, or is society nothing more than a figment of our imaginations?

Answer:

1. From birth our behaviour, comprehension of the world and beliefs are transmitted by direct care givers, then society which has shaped itself to survive in the surrounding environment. From age 7 we begin to form our own world within our social environment but it is 99–100% even if that socialization is with animals.

2. Social structure makes sense. Evolution/nature favours anything that results in the passing on of our genes. There are many things that have worked throughout the history of mankind. Strength, intelligence, monogamy which incidentally only exists in species with a societal structure like chimps and humans.

Society is one of those things that gave you a greater chance of passing on your genes and to more people too. It brings order rather than finding yourself at the end of a spear because someone wants your wife and food. It is a social contract. I will behave the same way as everyone else for the betterment of the whole. It gets many people workin towards common goals rather than everyone becoming a rock star, rather than find work serving society in other ways.

Society is simply an agreement upon how to live and ensure that as many of us survive to pass on our genes as otherwise if we all acted as individuals. Imagine no society and you are a woman stuck with kids from a guy who decided to just leave. It is the year 1000 BC and he was the one who brought home the food. Now he just left you and you do not hunt. You are not strong enough to fight off those who want to take everything you have, including your body and kids.

Society raises Armies to protect you, your family and your home. They organize police forces. They make us agree that we will not rob you or kill you for what you have without a severe penalty. They establish courts, protection, and make life better for all. If society did not work, the world would not have so many.

The way it works is that those who favor living in society lived longer, had more kids and was able to provide for them so that they lived long enough to have kids of their own. Those that shunned society, did not enjoy the protection against roving bands of bandits, provide medical care, or protection, so those types of humans had less children and became the minority of humans as a result.

Just stop and think that we are all here because our ancestors from the first humans were genetically disposed to adapt methods to live longer than others who died before they had kids. We are the end result of a very long line of humans who found successful ways to live longer and safer by forming societies with like interests and goals.

3.Higher socioeconomic class have money so greater life chances. Life chances affected by class, race, and gender (the three main areas of stratification in our society, according to sociologists. Functionalists believe that education and life-chances are directly linked.
