The word undergrowth is used here to express that the poet is not able to see where the road leads to, as the path turned towards the bushes.
Usually, UNDERGROWTH refers to the shrubbery, dense growth of the plants / weeds.
But poet chose this word to express about the unknown world of darkness.
As we don't know where a certain path leads to.
