Charles Freer Andrews, a Christian missionary, social reformer and an educator in India was known lovingly as Deen Bandhu (Friend of the Poor) by Gandhiji, for his contributions towards India’s freedom movement

EXPLANATION:

  • Charles Freer Andrews was influenced Gandhiji to return from South Africa to India. Gandhiji was a prominent person in the India’s civil rights fight in South Africa. More and more disheartened by the racist treatment and behavior of Indians by British officials as well as civilians, Charles Freer Andrews backed India’s political motives, and had written a letter in the Civil and Military Gazette in the year 1906 articulating these views.
  • Andrews became actively engaged in the activities of the Indian National Congress (INC), and he facilitated in resolving the cotton laborers’ strike in the year 1913 at Madras (now Chennai). Arriving in the year 1914, Charles Freer Andrews met Gandhiji, who was then leading India’s community's struggles against racial discrimination and police law-making which invaded Indians’ civil liberties.
  • Andrews was profoundly overwhelmed with Gandhi's knowledge of Christian principles and his espousal of the notion of ahimsa/non-violence which Gandhi blended with motivation from elements of Christian anarchism. Charles Freer Andrews also was Gandhi's advisor in his discussions with General Jan Smuts and was responsible for finalizing some of the details of their communications.
