In the decades of the sixties and seventies, the untiring efforts of Dr Norman Borlaug, an American agronomist, and Dr M.S Swaminathan, an Indian geneticist, helped our country usher in the Green Revolution which propelled it from a state of food insufficiency to one of food surplus. This was possible with the improvement of farming methods, introduction of high-yielding seeds, better crop rotation, use of better and more effective pesticides, better water management, use of chemical fertilisers etc.
In view of the above, we have improved in food production by leaps and bounds. This is the reason why the import bill for food material comprises only 3% of India's total imports.
