Green revolution in India has changed agriculture sector of India because its two main purposes are:
1. Increase usage of genetically improved seed types for greater production of crops
2. Increase in cultivation area
These two steps revolutionized the agriculture sector and farmers grew more and more crops and yields of these crops which ultimately reduced to three percent of imports.

The Green Revolution during the tenure of Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, who was ably assisted by a career diplomat and member of the Planning Commission, Tarlok Singh, took India from a position of frequent food insufficiency to a state of abundant production. This was undertaken during the decades of the sixties and seventies. It was ably shepherded by Drs Norman E. Borlaug, an American agronomist, and Dr M.S. Swaminathan, an Indian geneticist.
In view of the successful implementation of better cropping techniques, use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, efficient water management, production of high-yielding seeds through hybridisation etc, the country is today a food surplus nation.Consequently, food imports today constitute only about three per cent of the total of India's imports.
