After independence, there were several attempts that were made in order to achieve self fulfillment where economy and society won't depend on import for the food. But it wasn't until late 1960s that these attempts were successful. Also keep in mind that green revolution is continuous concept and is still ongoing. 

So what is Green Revolution - 
- Continuous expansion of farming areas
- Double cropping
- Use of genetically improved seeds for larger production

Thus with implementation of these techniques and their continued use, farmers were able to significantly increase the total food crop production which resulted in less and less need to import the food fro outside.
