AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome)

A very serious disease which is caused by a virus. The disease was first diagnosed in the USA in 1980's and since then it has been diagnosed in other countries also. Physicians fear that AIDS will come to affect more and more people in future.
AIDS virus kills WBC and reduces the immunity of the body. The patient becomes more likely to catch infectious diseases and cancer. About 40% of the patients die within a year or two. The origin of the disease is not known, but it is assumed that it came from West Africa or the southern part of Europe. Treatment with interferon has so far had some effect.

AIDS is basically transmitted only by a contact of infected cells containing blood of a patient with the blood of healthy person. It spreads mainly through :-

Unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected partner, Use of contaminated needles and syringes to inject drugs or vaccines, Razors for shaving, Organ transplant, also at the time of birth Mother to baby due to rupturing of blood vessels.

Some people have notion that AIDS spread through physical contact! AIDS does not spread by casual contact such activities like :-
Handshake, body contact in crowded public places or playing together, light kissing etc. It also does not spread by blood sucking insects such as Mosquito's.

Some common Symptoms of AIDS are weakness, loss of appetite, loss of weight, fever and swelling of the lymph nodes.

At present, there is no specific treatment against HIV infection. But, Some treatments are available to get some relief, such as “immunostimulative therapy”.

As we know prevention is better than cure :) Following steps may be followed to prevent this disease :-

Proper knowledge & education to people specially youths about AIDS, Avoidance of sharing of razors for shaving, protected- sexual intercourse using contraceptive methods like condoms, Use of disposable needles and syringes.

Studies says that, “ A victim of full-blown AIDS dies within 3 years from infections. Deaths from AIDS occurs mainly in individuals aged 20 to 44 years.
