let Mr. Nelson's age be x years
and his son's age be y years

Ist case

x=4y

x-4y=0 ___________________1

2nd case

Mr.Nelson's age = (x+4)
his son's age =(y+4)

ATQ

x+4 = 3(y+4)

x+4=3y+12

x-3y=8_________________2

solving 1 and 2

x - 4y = 0
x - 3y = 8
(-) (+). (-)
_________
-y= -8

y=8

putting y in 1

x-4y=0
x-4*8=0
x=32

so Mr.Nelson's present age = x years = 32 years
His son's present age =y years = 8 years
