Methane:
- What is methane?
→ Methane is an organic compound formed by 1 carbon atom attached to 4 Hydrogen atoms.
→ It is a colourless, odourless hydrocarbon belonging to alkane family.
→ It is mainly used as a fuel in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
- Electron Dot Structure:
(given in attachment)
- Type of bond formed by methane:
Covalent, Single bond between 4 Hydrogen atoms and 1 carbon atom.
- Why methane is a poor conductor of electricity?
♦ We know that in covalent bonds, electrons are shared between atoms.
♦ Similarly in methane, electrons are shared between atoms and so no charged particles are formed in these compounds.
♦ Therefore, Methane and other covalent compounds are poor conductors of electricity.
- Why such compounds have low melting points?
★ Covalent compounds have small intermolecular forces of attraction between the atoms.
★ Less amount of heat is enough to break these bonds
★ Therefore, such compounds have low melting points.
- Reaction with oxygen:
CH₄ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O
Methane burns in Oxygen to form Carbon dioxide and water.
The chemical name of methane is CH_{4}CH 4
it is a colorless and odorless flammable gas which is main constituent of nature gas.
Electrode dot structure:
Bond formed in this compound is single covalent bond.
1)These compounds are poor conductors of electricity because they form covalent compounds that does not consist of free electron or free ions.
2)Have low melting and boiling point because of weak Vanderwaal's force of attraction.
CH_{4} +2O_{2} ---->CO_{2} +2H_{2} OCH 4 +2O 2
−−−−>CO 2 +2H 2 o
Combustion reaction takes place producing carbon dioxide and water.
