Toluene (Methyl benzene) is treated under high pressure with carbon monoxide and hydrogen chloride in presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride (AlCl3) to give p-methyl benzaldehyde. It is the Gatterman Koch reaction. This reaction is used to add a formyl group into the benzene ring.
