Given :

Tom of mass 3 kg is sleeping over skate board at rest and Jerry of mass 500 g is running with a velocity of 20 m/s towards Tom.

skate board has a mass 500 g

To Find  : Jerry jumped on Tom and both start skating on the same board then the combined velocity of Tom and Jerry just after collide

Solution:

Tom of mass 3 kg is sleeping over skate  of 500 g

Hence total Mass = 3 + 0.5  = 3.5 kg

Jerry of mass 500 g is running with a velocity of 20 m/s towards Tom

initial momentum = mv      as Tom  is one rest

= 0.5 * 20

= 10  kgm/s

Jerry jumped on Tom and both start skating on the same board

Hence total mass = 3.5 + 0.5  = 4 kg

10 = 4 ( v)

=> v = 2.5

combined velocity of Tom and Jerry just after collide = 2.5  m/s
