The tongue has two functions which are described below.

  • The tongue has taste buds on its surface which helps in the recognition of particular tastes.
  • A few of the main taste buds are sweet, sour, bitter and salty.
  • The tongue is one of the longest muscle organs of the body.
  • It helps in rolling and pushing down the food ball into the food pipe.
  • As the teeth and tongue work together to chew and masticate the food, they also help in swallowing it properly.
