When you open MS Word, you will see a blank page. Above the page, at the top of the MS Word screen, you will see the Menu bar. The Menu bar lists File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, Tools, Table, Window, Help. Point with your mouse to any of those words and then click your mouse button to display the particular menu. If you do not wish to use the mouse, hold down the Alt key and press the underlined letter to display the menu as shown on Figure 1 below. Click your mouse on the blank page if you do not want to use the menu or press the Alt key again.

MS Word Menu Bar

In order for you to set up your page in the MLA format for an essay or research paper, you should see the menu bar and two toolbars below the menu bar at the top of your MS Word screen. The first toolbar is known as the standard toolbar and the second as the formatting toolbar. Instead of using the menu bar to change the font of a document, for example, you can use your mouse to click one of the icons on the formatting toolbar to change the font. To display the menu bar and both toolbars as shown above, click Tools on the Menu bar and then Customize, as shown on Figure 2 below. Remember: If you do not want to use the mouse, hold down the Alt key and press the underlined letter on your keyboard.)

When the Customize menu bar appears, check the boxes if they are not already checked to display the Standard and Formatting toobars

Customize Dialog Box

When the Options tab appears, check the boxes to show the full menus and to display the Standard and Formatting toobars on two rows as shown in Figure 4 below and then click Close or press the Alt key again to return to your document:

Options Tab

When the MS Word blank page appears again, you are ready to click the menu bar or an icon on the standard or formatting toolbars to open a new document, change the page setup of a document, or change the format of text or paragraphs of your document to give it the same appearance as a professionally prepared document.

MS Word Print Layout View

The above image displays MS Word in the Print Layout view. This view displays a vertical and horizontal ruler with the page margins above and to the left of the ruler. To make sure that you are in the Print Layout view, select View on the Menu bar and then Pint Layout on the View menu, as shown in Figure 6 below:

Select Print Layout on the View Menu
