the change in pH is responsible for tooth decay . Generally the saliva in our mouth is basic in nature having pH value 7.8 or 8.0 . But when we eat sugar containing food then bacteria already present in our mouth break down sugar into lactic acid and thereby decreases the pH value of our mouth upto 5.5 or 5.8 i.e acidic in nature . When pH value of saliva decreases then our teeth start decaying .
The pH value of tooth paste is 8.0 to 9.0 i.e basic in nature so by regular brushing with tooth paste can prevent decaying of teeth
