TOPIC: ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES : FLOCABULARY
THE STORY : You’ve probably heard of ocean waves, but what about electromagnetic waves? Electromagnetic waves are energy waves produced by the vibration of charged particles. They are also called electromagnetic radiation and electromagnetic energy. These waves carry energy through empty space at a constant speed. All electromagnetic waves move at 186,000 miles per second. That’s the speed of light.
You can’t always see electromagnetic waves, but they are found throughout the universe. There are only a few waves that are visible to the human eye. Electromagnetic radiation is used to meet our needs and wants. It makes important things — like medical imaging, reheating food and cell phones — possible. Radiation can be helpful for sending texts, but it’s not always a good thing. The sunburn you get sitting on the beach is caused by electromagnetic radiation, too.
