The disease is the malfunctioning of any body organ due to some reasons. It leads to ill health.


1. What is a Disease --

The word disease (dis + ease = without ease) actually means a state a of uneasiness, discomfort or disturbed ease. It can be defined as a condition in which normal functioning of the body or its some part or organ is disturbed or deranged. The normal state of an organism represents a delicate physiological balance leads to the manifestation of disease.

2. Symptoms and Signs --

Manifestation of disease is in the form of some symptoms or some difinite signs. Thus, a symptom is a change in the normal structure or functioning of the body system or body part. This indicates that there is something wrong in the body, but symptoms do not provide exact diagnosis of the disease.
Signs are definite clues or indications of a specific disease. Medical tests provide thw correct diagnosis of the disease.

3. Acute and Chronic Diseases -

(i) Acute diseases - They appear suddenly,produce severe symptoms and last for a short period. They last for not more than a week and do not have long term effect on health. Example - Typhoid,Malaria etc.

(ii) Chronic Diseases - The chronic diseases develop gradually and last for a long durations even up to several years to life long. They cannot be cured completely. Example - Diabetes, Tuberculosis etc.


4. Causes of Diseases -

* Lack of good nourishment.
* Poor genetic constitution.
* Povery or lack of public services
* Infection with causative agent (virus,fungus)


5. Congenital Diseases -

Comgenital diseases are present since birth. These are caused either due to genetic disorders or environmental factors. Example - Diabetes, Thalassemia.


6. Acquired Diseases -

These diseases are acquired by the organisms after birth and not heritable, i.e., they are not passed to the offspring.

7. Non-communicable Diseases -

They do not spread from diseased to healthy persons.They are caused due to some internal factors in the body and not by external pathogens or germs.

8. Communicable Diseases -

The diseases that are caused by the entry of disease-causing microorganisms are called communicable diseases.

8. Treatment of Infections Diseases -

Patient is given medicine to reduce the symptoms,like fever, pain etc. The pathogens and infectious microbes are treated with medicines that kill them by disrupting or blocking the biochemical processes essential for their survival.
