Answer:

A gas leak from the LG Polymers plant in Visakhapatnam, which was operating without environmental clearance for over two decades, killed 12 people and sickened hundreds on May 7. Sumit Bhattacharjee reports on how gross human negligence and violations of rules and the law led to the deadly disaster.

Cause : The gas that has been identified as the primary suspect for the Visakhapatnam gas leak is Styrene, a neurotoxin. On the wake of the lock down, the plant was hastily shut down with a large bulk of chemical stored in the tanker

Steps taken by government : ChiefMinister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday formally transferred Rs 10,000 each to 19,893 people of affected villages abutting LG Polymers plant at RR Venkatapuram in Visakhapatnam.

Addressing the victims and officials of Visakhapatnam district from his camp office at Tadepalli, the Chief Minister said tragic incidents such as the gas leak in LG Polymers should not occur again in the State. The CM appealed to people not to panic as the State government will always stand by them. He said for the first time Rs 1 crore was paid to 12 families, whose members had died in the gas leak. “The government’s priority is to restore normalcy and provide help to the victims,” he asserted.
