Famous author Roald Dahl in his poem “Television” has listed some reasons that clearly indicate why books are better than TV. He feels that TV “ CLOGS AND CLUTTERS UP THE MIND!” and also “MAKES A CHILD SO DULL AND BLIND”. TV comes with the side effects of numbing the mind and ruining the eyesight, while books are quite the opposite.
Books open up new windows, trigger the imagination and get the creativity going. Books teach us how to visualise things, landscapes and even solutions, while television fills the mind with unnecessary stimuli. For example, most of the advertisements on TV lack logic and are of no use to a majority of us, yet we are forced to watch those ridiculous endorsements. So, the presence of unwanted sensory stimuli is extremely high.
Reading as a hobby is appreciated, but watching TV as a pastime is never thought of highly in any country in the world. That one statement is enough to prove that books are better than TV. Books do not give out any rays that ruin children’s eyesight, or cause sleep issues. Instead books allow even the most introverted people to enjoy themselves.
Further, while TVs are fixed, and dependent on electricity, there are no such hassles with books. Like Stephen King says, "Books are a uniquely portable magic." Books offer a lot of convenience because they can be carried anywhere. Also, they do not need any form of energy to be functional.
Considering all these factors, it becomes evident that books have an upperhand over TV. A TV is a modern device that many people now feel is “invading” their homes, but books will always continue to be treasured possessions.
