Good morning to the honorable Principal, teachers and my dear friends!
As we all gather here today on the great occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, on this occasion I would like to say a few words on one of the most important subjects of India, known as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. A campaign launched by the Government of India to tackle the problem of sanitation across the country. This campaign has been specifically done to educate the people and acknowledge the importance of cleanliness in our environment.
This campaign was started by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2 October 2014 as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of India, always believed in cleanliness in his surroundings and once said that cleanliness is more important than independence.
This campaign is specifically aimed at giving people access to toilets and curbing open defecation systems, cleaning rivers like Ganga and Yamuna which are highly polluted, spreading awareness about waste management, etc. This campaign is a major step towards development by the Government of India.
In India, because cleanliness opens the door to prosperity and success in life and it can be successful only when every citizen of India vows to maintain cleanliness in the area around it as it is not the responsibility of the government alone.
