Individual basalt lava flows are 1–20 m thick, so a vertical section of 100 m or more encompasses many near-horizontal high permeability zones at each of the flow boundaries, and young basalt landscapes comprising these layered flows therefore have a high overall permeability (Davis, 1969; Kilburn, 2000).
