Since, the forces experienced by the 2 charges constituting the electric dipole when placed in an uniform external electric field are equal and opposite in nature, the net force on the dipole is zero.
Although the net force on the dipole is zero, it isn't necessary that these equal and opposite forces act along the same line of action. If they don't, the electric dipole experiences a net torque (a force couple is formed) that tends to align it in the direction of the uniform external electric field.
