To find the exact marks out of percentage, you have to know the total marks. Otherwise, you will calculate on 100 marks.

The formula to convert percentage to marks:

(Percentage/100) x Total marks

If the total marks is 100, then the calculation is easy. Both the denominator and numerator are same, so it gets cancelled and the percentage becomes the marks.

So, if somebody says he got 40%, that means he has got 40 out of 100.

But, if the total marks is 50, then 40% of 50 will be 20. If the total marks is 200, then 40% of 200 is 80
